What are trophic levels
The different stages of a food chain
How many trophic levels are there and what organisms are on each trophic level
4 trophic levels
Trophic 1- producer(plant) starts the food chain and makes their own food by photosynthesis using energy from sun
trophic 2 - primary consumers, herbivores that eat plants and algae (the producer)
Trophic 3- secondary consumers, carnivores that eat primary consumers so are meat eaters
Trophic 4- tertiary consumers carnivores that eat other carnivores (secondary consumers) Tertiary consumers have no longer reactors and are at the top of food chain and is also known as apex predators
What is the role of decomposers
Decomposers such as bacteria and fungi play an important role in ecosystems.
They decompose any dead plants or animal materials left in the environment they can do this by secreting enzymes that break the dead stuff down into small soluble food molecules.
These then diffuse into the microorganisms. This process also releases nutrients into the environment which the producers need in order to grow.
