Osmosis
The movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration.
Isotonic environment
An environment where water enters and leaves cells at the same rate, maintaining balance.
Hypertonic environment
An environment that causes cells to shrivel or collapse due to water exiting the cell.
Hypotonic environment
An environment that causes cells to swell or burst due to water entering the cell.
Tonicity
The ability of a solution to cause a cell to gain or lose water.
Flaccid
A term used to describe plant cells that have lost water and become limp.
Rigidity
The firmness or stiffness of plant tissue, which can be affected by water content.
Cell wall
A structural layer surrounding plant cells that helps maintain shape and rigidity.
