What was the naval war?

American ships won key battles but British ships maintained a blockade of the eastern US slowing trade with Europe. Britain will block the port of Boston and the port of NEw York to prevent trading. Jefferson’s trade embargo and British blockade led to a rise of manufacturing in America.

New England States had opposed the war/were hurt most by British blockade. State discussed the possibility of seceding( formally withdraw from an alliance, political or religious organization).

In 1814, British forces invaded Washington D.C., burning key buildings including the White House and the Capitol as a response to American attacks in Canada. This event symbolized a significant low point for the United States during the War of 1812.

Battle ships attacked Fort McHenryFrancis Scott Key wrote the "Star-Spangled Banner" after witnessing the battle, which inspired national pride.

What is the Battle of New Orleans?

British attempt to control the Mississippi river and cut off American trade. British forces(well trained and experienced) outnumber American troops(frontier men, free men, pirates and a few soldiers). Andrew Jackson will lead the defense of New Orleans and hold off British attack.

Treaty of Ghent restores borders to pre-war locations. Confederation of Native Americans defeated and demoralized. British practice of impressment ended. Strengthened national identities of Canadians and Americans. Created a national hero in Andrew Jackson. Federalist party falls out of favor due to opposition of the war. Impressment ended due to the War of 1812 but the end of Napoleonic wars in Europe.

Why did we fight the War of 1812?

The War of 1812 was fought primarily due to trade restrictions imposed by Britain, the impressment of American sailors, and ongoing conflicts with Native Americans. It was also fueled by American expansionist desires to conquer Canada and national pride.

The War of 1812 was America’s first declared war. Why?

Some call it the second war of independence which was fought to gain respect of American right to trade freely with other nations. Congress issues its first declaration of war. Democrat-Republicans, mostly young congressmen from Western and southern states supported war known as war hawks. War declared over the objection of Federalists who all voted against war.
