• Perform hand hygiene and explain the procedure to the resident.
• Provide privacy and drape the resident’s chest to protect clothing.
• Put on gloves; wet the toothbrush and apply a small amount of toothpaste.
• Brush all surfaces: Gently brush the inner and outer surfaces of the teeth, chewing surfaces, and the tongue.
• Assist the resident in rinsing; wipe the mouth thoroughly.
• Remove soiled linens, rinse the toothbrush and container, return equipment to storage.
• Remove gloves properly, perform hand hygiene again, and ensure a call light is within reach.
