What is compounding?

Any manipulation of a drug beyond what is on the drug label

Who makes the decision to compound drugs?

Veterinarian with a VCPR

What are the acceptable reasons to compound?

-Patient requires strength that is not commercially available

-Patient requires a dosage form that is not commercially available

-Commercially available medication contains a toxic substance

What are the unacceptable reasons to compound?

-Pharmacy does not carry manufacture strength

-Cost

-Commercially available product is on allocation

What are some concerns with compounding?

-Still may carry risk for the pt

-Safety isn’t evaluated

-Many products do not meet USP standards

What is the expiration date?

-Based on product-specific studies and assigned by manufacturer

-Looks at specific formulations and container under specific conditions

What is the beyond use date?

USP defaults from studies that are performed to look at sterility and potency (ensure produce is still within ±10% in a certain amount of time)
