Redox Reaction

A reduction-oxidation reaction involving the movement of electrons from one molecule to another.

Oxidation

The loss of electrons from a substance.

Reduction

The addition of electrons to another substance.

Cellular Respiration

The process by which cells break down glucose for energy, requiring oxygen, producing water and carbon dioxide.

NAD (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide)

A coenzyme central to metabolism that accepts electrons and becomes reduced to NADH.

NADH

The reduced form of NAD, which shuttles electrons in redox reactions.

Electron Transport Chain

A series of redox reactions where electrons pass from one carrier to another, ultimately transferring to oxygen.

Dehydrogenase

An enzyme that strips hydrogen atoms from molecules during redox reactions.

Final Electron Acceptor

The molecule (oxygen) that receives electrons at the end of the electron transport chain.

Mitochondrial Inner Membranes

The location where the electron carrier molecules of the electron transport chain are found.
