Post and lintel construction

A horizontal beam (the lintel) supported by a vertical post at either end.

Colonnade

A row of columns connected by beams.

Classical Orders

Ways that columns are built.

Doric order

One of the classical orders of columns, known for its simplicity.

Ionic order

A classical order recognized by its scroll-like volutes.

Corinthian order

The most ornate classical order, characterized by elaborate acanthus leaves.

Façade

Any side of a building, usually the front or entrance.

Pediment

The triangular space, situated above the row of columns.

Cornice

The molding around the top of a building.

Arches

Architectural elements that enable builders to move their posts further apart.

Keystone

The top and center of the arch, exerts force on the voussoirs to hold the arch in place.

Arcade

A row of arches.

Vault

An arch that is extended.

Barrel Vault

When the arch is extended in depth to create a tunnel.

Groin Vault

An intersection of two barrel vaults.

Dome

An arch rotated 180 degrees.

Oculus

A round opening in the center of a dome.
