What are systems?
A group of parts that work together to perform a desired task.
What are examples of systems?
Nervous systems, computers, and a car.
What are physical systems?
Systems that rely on a group of physical parts to perform a function.
What are social systems?
A group of people or other organisms joining together to perform a task and establish relationships.
How do systems change when inputs or conditions change?
The system changes because the output depends on the input.
What is systems thinking?
Looking at how all the parts work together, including inputs, outputs, and side effects, and how they affect people and living things.
What do all systems have?
An input, output, and side effect.
What is a natural social system?
Social systems that are from the earth or aren't human-made.
What are the inputs of a clock radio?
Batteries/electricity and a radio signal.
What are the outputs of a clock radio?
Time display, sound (radio/alarm).
What is a subsystem?
A smaller system inside of a system that has its own inputs and outputs and helps the larger system function.
What are the inputs of a garden system?
Sunlight, soil, nutrients, and water.
What are the outputs of a garden system?
Flowers, fruits, vegetables, and homes for animals.
Identify one physical system and its input/output.
Physical System: Oven; Input: Raw food and heat; Output: Cooked food.
Identify one social system and its input/output.
Social System: Healthcare; Input: Sick or injured people; Output: Treatment or recovery.
Similarities between physical and social systems?
Both have inputs, outputs, and side effects; have a purpose; have components working together.
Differences between physical and social systems?
Oven cooks food quickly using mechanical and electrical parts; Healthcare improves health more slowly and involves people and social structures.
