inflammation
immune systems reponse to harmful stimuli and acts by removing the stimulus and initiating the healing process
Physical signs
redness, swelling, heat, pain and pus
Vascular stage
involves blood vessels, damaged cells release cytokines and prostagladins that attract neutrophils, and mast cells release histamines, causing vasodilation and increase permability
cellular stage
involves immune cells, migration of neutrophils to infection site followed by macrophages, release signals that attract more phagocytes that attack pathogens
resolution stage
when inflammation stops and normal stage is restored, includes reversal of process that produced inflammation
Signs
Vasodilation causes increased blood flow resulting in redness and heat, also causes increase of fluids causing swelling, pus is due to dead phagocytes and cell debris
