What is the definition of conservation ? ( 保護 )

The preservation and management of the environment and natural resources

2
New cards

What are the 2 types of conservation ?

In situ and Ex situ

3
New cards

What is the definition of “ in situ “ Conservation ?

Conservation is carried out within the organism’s natural habitat

4
New cards

what is the definition of ‘ Ex situ ‘ conservation ?

Conservation is carried out outside the natural habitat, eg : zoo , lab , other research centre

6
New cards

What and how does the ‘ in situ ‘ conservation do / help ?

Help by restricting human access and monitoring for illegal activity such as poaching

Help to keep the animals healthy and remove invasive species that threaten the ecosystem

Maintained habitats and promote breeding amongst the population in a way that encourage genetic diversity

7
New cards

What and how does the ‘ Ex situ ‘ conservation do / help ?

Botanical gardens help preserve and reproduce plant life

Seed basin provide a great repository of plant life , that can be used, should any ever go extinct.

Work to breed plant to better suit the changing environment

8
New cards

Why is captive breeding important ?

essential for keeping organisms alive, many spices have gone extinct in the wild but survive in zoos or research facilities.

However, as there’re are so few organisms present , maintaining genetic diversity can be difficult.

9
New cards

What are the 4 negatives that can be associated with captive breeding ?

Loss of genetic diversity

Diseases

Behaviour

Habitat

10
New cards

How is the loss of genetic diversity a negative ?

can leave organism susceptible to disease

If the genetic have been altered too much by the selective breeding , then the released animals may be too genetically different from other organisms of the same species and they won’t be able to mate and produce fertile offspring.

11
New cards

How does disease a negative association ?

Not being exposed to pathogens in their native habitats meaning they are susceptible once they are released

12
New cards

How is behaviour a negative association ?

Many behaviours are learned, and organism may struggle in the natural environment.

Eg : Monkeys - starve as they never learned how to look for their own food OR Antelope died as they had not learned to flee from predators

13
New cards

How does habitat a negative association?

if habitats ave been destroyed, they need to be restored first or the animals have nowhere to go

14
New cards

What work had been done to help ?

International union of the conservation of nature ( IUCN ) works to foster agreement between countries and government.

Responsible for producing a ‘ red list ‘, to help to secure a major international convention .

15
New cards

What is the other conservation that had helped ?

CITES : Convention of the international trade in endangered species

16
New cards

What are the different convention in the Rio Conference

Convention of biological diversity - required countries to work hard to maintain biodiversity

United. Nations Framework convention on climate change - aimed to reduce greenhouse has emission

United Nations convention to combat desertification
