Ion

An atom or group of atoms that has an electric charge.

Negative charge = Anion

Positive charge = Cation

2
New cards

Inorganic Ion

Ion which dosent contain carbon (but there are few exceptions)

3
New cards

Where can inorganic ions be found?

  • Solution

  • Cytoplasm

  • Body fluids

4
New cards

What does an ionisation role determine?

An ionisation role depends on their properties which determines if it is found in high or low concentrations

5
New cards

Iron ions

Fe²+ binds to oxygen in haemoglobin and when the oxygen is bound the Fe²+ ion temporarily becomes Fe³+, until oxygen is released.

6
New cards

Hydrogen ions

The more H+ present, the lower the pH and the more acidic the environment.

7
New cards

Sodium ions

Help molecules like glucose and amino acids cross cell membranes into cells known as co-transport.

8
New cards

Phosphate ion

When attached to another molecule it’s known as a phosphate group. The bonds between phosphate groups store energy in ATP and allow nucleotides to join up to form polynucleotides in DNA and RNA.
