Fundamental Niche
Niche potentially occupied by that species
Realized Niche
Portion of the fundamental niche actually occupied by that species
Interspecific Interactions
Interactions that occur between individuals of different species
Competition
Occurs when individuals of different species use a resource that limits reproduction and survival of both individuals
Competitive Exclusion
Local elimination of inferior competitors—can result when 2 species use the same limited resources
Ecological Niche
Specific set of biotic and abiotic environmental resources it uses
Resource Partitioning
Differentiation of niches that enables similar species to coexist in a community
Fundamental Niche
Theorized niche potentially occupied by a species
Realized Niche
Portion of the fundamental niche actually occupied by that species
Character Displacement
Tendency for characteristics to diverge more in sympatric than in allopatric populations of two species
Exploitation
Individuals of one species benefit by feeding on individuals of the other species (which are harmed) Ex: Herbivory, predation, parasitism
Batesian Mimicry
Palatable/harmless species mimics an unpalatable or harmful model
Herbivory
Interaction in which a Herbivore eats parts of a plant or algae
Positive Interactions
Where at least one species benefits and neither is harmed, Ex: Mutualism and Commensalism
Commensalism
Interaction in which individuals of one species benefits while members of the other species is neither harmed nor helped
