Salt Name
Metal Name + Acid Part
Hydrochloric acid
Forms Chloride salt
Sulfuric acid
Forms Sulfate salt
Nitric acid
Forms Nitrate salt
Acid + Metal → Salt + Hydrogen gas
Example: Magnesium + Sulfuric acid → Magnesium sulfate + Hydrogen
Acid + Metal Oxide → Salt + Water
Example: Copper(II) oxide + Sulfuric acid → Copper sulfate + Water
Acid + Metal Carbonate → Salt + Water + Carbon dioxide
Example: Calcium carbonate + Hydrochloric acid → Calcium chloride + Water + Carbon dioxide
Making Soluble Salts from Insoluble Substances
Steps: 1. Add the insoluble metal oxide/carbonate to warm acid until no more reacts. 2. Filter out the excess solid. 3. Evaporate some of the water to concentrate the solution. 4. Leave to cool so crystals form. 5. Filter and dry the crystals.
