Bicycle Kick
A move where a player kicks the ball while in midair, with their back to the goal and both feet off the ground.
Header
Hitting the ball using the head, often used to pass, shoot, or clear the ball.
Midfield Line
The line across the center of the field that divides it into two equal halves.
Trap
Stopping or controlling the ball using your body (foot, thigh, chest, etc.) to keep possession.
Goal Kick
A kick taken by the defending team from inside the goal area after the ball crosses the goal line without a goal and was last touched by the attacking team.
Corner Kick
A kick awarded to the attacking team when the ball crosses the goal line last touched by a defender, taken from the corner arc.
Tackling
A move to take the ball away from an opponent, usually by using the feet.
Corner Flag
A flag located at each of the four corners of the soccer field, marking the corners of the playing area.
Defender
A player whose main role is to stop the opposing team from scoring and protect their goal.
Direct Free Kick
A free kick where the ball can be kicked directly into the goal without touching another player.
Sideline/Touch Line
The boundary lines along the length of the field; the ball is out of play when it fully crosses these lines.
Drop Kick
A kick where the ball is dropped and kicked as it touches the ground, often used by goalkeepers.
Free Kick
A kick awarded after a foul, can be direct (can score) or indirect (must touch another player before scoring).
Goal Area
The smaller box inside the penalty area where goal kicks are taken from.
Goal Line
The line that runs along the width of the field at each end; a goal is scored when the entire ball crosses this line between the goalposts.
Midfielders
Players who play in the middle third of the field; they support both defense and attack.
Forwards
Players whose main role is to score goals; they play closest to the opponent's goal.
Offside
A rule violation where an attacking player is closer to the opponent's goal than the second-last defender when the ball is passed to them.
Attacker
A player on the team currently trying to score a goal.
Corner Arc
A quarter-circle located at each corner of the field where corner kicks are taken from.
Penalty Kick/Penalty Shot
A shot taken from the penalty spot after a foul occurs inside the penalty area by the defending team.
Red Card
A card shown to a player for a serious offense; the player is ejected and cannot be replaced.
Yellow Card
A warning card shown for unsporting behavior or repeated fouls; two yellows equal a red card.
Striker
A forward who is primarily focused on scoring goals.
Throw-in
A method of restarting play when the ball has gone out over the sideline, thrown in with both hands from behind the head and both feet on the ground.
