Critical Thinking
The process of determining what can reasonably be believed and using that information to reach thoughtful conclusions.
Obstacles to Critical Thinking
Factors that hinder critical thinking, such as slanted media sources, deceptive claims by political leaders, cognitive laziness, and misinformation.
Political Science
The systematic study of government and politics, which can enhance critical thinking skills.
Political Culture
The widely shared and deep-seated beliefs of a country's people about politics.
Liberty
The principle that individuals should be free to act as they choose, as long as they do not infringe unreasonably on others.
Individualism
A commitment to personal initiative and self-sufficiency, often fostered by economic opportunities.
Equality
The notion that all individuals are equal in their moral worth and entitled to equal treatment under the law.
Self-Government
The principle that the people are the ultimate source of governing authority and should have a voice in governance.
Democracy
A system where the people govern, either directly or through elected representatives, characterized by majority rule.
Pluralism
The idea that the preferences of special interests largely determine what government does.
Constitutionalism
The principle that government powers are limited by law and that there are lawful restrictions on its authority.
Free-Market System
An economic system primarily based on private transactions, with some government intervention.
Authoritarian Government
A government that openly represses political opponents and does not allow political freedoms.
Majoritarianism
The principle that the majority effectively determines government action.
Elitism
The power exercised by well-positioned and highly influential individuals in society.
Cognitive Laziness
The tendency to avoid critical analysis and thorough examination of claims.
