Plot Diagram

Internal Conflict
A psychological struggle within the mind of a character.
External Conflict
A struggle between a character and an outside force.
Independent Clause
A group of words that contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought.
Dependent Clause
A group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought.
Gerund
A verb form ending in -ing that functions as a noun.
Appositive Phrase
A noun or noun phrase placed next to another noun to provide additional information.
Compound Sentence
A sentence that contains at least two independent clauses, usually joined by a coordinating conjunction.
Complex Sentence
A sentence that contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
Compound-Complex Sentence
A sentence that contains at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
Common Nouns
Generic names for a person, place, or thing.
Proper Nouns
Specific names for particular individuals, places, or organizations.
Pronouns
Words that take the place of nouns.
Adverbs
Words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, often ending in -ly.
Prepositions
Words that show relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence.
Conjunctions
Words that connect clauses or sentences or coordinate words in the same clause.
Interjections
Words that express emotion and are not grammatically related to other words.
Affix
A morpheme that is attached to a word stem to form a new word.
Homophones
Words that sound alike but have different meanings.
Antonyms
Words that have opposite meanings.
Synonyms
Words that have similar meanings.
Compound Words
Words that are made up of two or more smaller words.
Punctuation
The marks used in writing to separate sentences and clarify meaning.
Capitalization
The use of uppercase letters to begin sentences and for proper nouns.
Grammar
The system and structure of a language including syntax, morphology, and punctuation.
Fable
A short story that conveys a moral lesson, often with animals as characters.
Folklore
The traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community passed through generations.
