How are electrons transferred to oxygen via a series of processes inside mitochondria (aerobic metabolism)?
catabolic metabolites from carbon fuels in the TCA, while their electrons are transferred onto carrier molecules
these electrons in NADH and FADH2 are further transported via other carriers in the ETC and used to reduce O2 to H2O. enable transport of protons across the inner membrane from the matrix to the intermembrane space of the mitochondrion creating a proton gradient
the electrochemical energy of the proton gradient between intermembrane space and matrix drives the reaction of ADP and inorganic phosphate to ATP by a large transmembrane protein complex, the ATP synthase. protons return to matrix and are pumped out by ETC. the combined processes of ETC and ATP synthesis are referred to as oxidative phosphorylation
