Remedial Training: Step 1
Identifying the problem and determining what training needs would best satisfy the employee's specific need(s).
Remedial Training: Step 2
Assigning the employee to remedial training with the appropriate certified Department instructor.
Remedial Training: Step 3
Evaluating the employee's progress and completion of the training and submitting the results (email or memo) including what training was administered to the employee's immediate supervisor.
Remedial Training: Step 4
Determining if the training need(s) has been met and whether any additional action is necessary via a meeting between the employee and their immediate supervisor.
Police Bicycles
Authorized for use only by officers trained as bike officers; deployment dictated by schedule, events, and supervisor discretion.
Designated Canine Vehicle
Equipped with canine cages; any sworn officer may drive the vehicle.
Canine Vehicle Restrictions
Limited to handlers unless otherwise authorized, following protocol during pursuits (41.1.4 (C,3)).
Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS)
Commonly known as a "drone", is only to be used by officers who have successfully completed the Valparaiso Police Department UAS Pilot Certification Course.
Motorcycle Unit Operation
Operated only by assigned officer(s); no passengers are allowed.
Motorcycle Usage Restrictions
Prohibited during inclement weather or hazardous driving conditions.
Motorcycle Pursuit Protocol
Requires permission from the Officer in Charge to continue; maintaining sight and safe distance until relieved by other vehicles, Officer in Charge shall not work as a motor officer during their assigned shift, unless there is a second supervisor on-duty.
Police Bicycles Equipment
The bicycles shall be equipped with a water bottle, bell, headlights and taillights for night riding (lights and siren), Vehicle lock out tool, Gear Bag. All officers are equipped with a specialized uniform shirt, uniform bike shorts, nylon gun belt and accessories, bike helmet, riding shoes, gloves, glasses, padded riding shorts.
