Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)
Facilities that treat domestic and industrial wastewater before it is released into the environment.
Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTWs)
Municipal wastewater treatment plants that are owned by governmental entities.
Conventional Pollutants
Pollutants typically found in domestic wastewater, such as BOD5 and TSS.
Nonconventional Pollutants
Pollutants that primarily originate from commercial and industrial sources, like heavy metals and certain chemicals.
Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5)
A measure of the amount of oxygen that microorganisms will consume while decomposing organic matter in water.
Total Suspended Solids (TSS)
Accurate measure of solid materials suspended in water, which can affect water quality and aquatic life.
Priority Pollutants
A list of pollutants regulated by the EPA due to their potential risk to human health and the environment.
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
A permit system regulating the discharge of pollutants to U.S. waters under the Clean Water Act.
Suspended Solids
Solid particles in water that do not dissolve, affecting light penetration and aquatic ecosystems.
Tertiary Treatment
Advanced wastewater treatment methods focused on removing nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus.
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
A measure of the amount of oxygen that can be consumed by chemical reactions in a water sample.
Algal Growth
The increase of algae in water bodies that can result from excess nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus.
