U-groove weld
A type of groove weld where the edges of the joint members are shaped like a 'U'.
Ultra-low-hydrogen electrode
A covered electrode that provides a lower hydrogen atmosphere to prevent cracking in high-strength steels.
Ultrasonic cutting (UAC)
A thermal cutting process that severs materials using heat from ultrasonic vibrations.
Ultrasonic welding (USW)
A solid-state welding process that produces coalescence through high-frequency vibratory energy under pressure.
Underbead crack
A crack in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) that does not extend to the surface of the base metal.
Undercut
A groove melted into the base metal near the weld toe or root that is left unfilled by weld metal.
Underfill
A condition where the weld face or root surface is below the adjacent surface of the base metal.
Unfilled crater
A depression located at the termination of a weld bead.
Unhomed
A robot that has not been synchronized to its reference position.
Unit of current
The ampere (A).
Unit of resistance
The ohm ($\Omega$).
Unit of voltage
The volt (V).
Upset
Bulk deformation caused by pressure application in welding.
Upset welding (UW)
A resistance welding process that produces coalescence using heat from resistance to welding current.
Lap Joint
A joint where two pieces overlap each other.
Butt Joint
A joint where two pieces are joined end-to-end.
Tee Joint
A joint formed by the intersection of two pieces at right angles.
Corner Joint
A joint created at the corner where two pieces meet.
Edge Joint
A joint formed between the edges of two pieces.
