Basic Biology Vocabulary

Ecosystem

All the living and non-living things that interact in a perticular area.

Habitat

The place were an organism lives and that provides the things that the organism needs.

Biotic factors

The living parts of an ecosystem

Abiotic factors

The non-living parts of an ecosystem (water, sunlight, oxygen, Temperature, soil, and dead things put together.

Photosynthesis

A process of when plants and algae using water sunlight and carbon dioxide to make food.

Species

A group of organisms that are physicaly simmular and can reproduce to make fertile off spring.

Population

All the members of one species in a particular area.

Community

All the different populations that live together in an area.

Ecology

The study of how living things interact with each other and their environment.

Population density

The number of individuals in a specific area.

Estimate

An approximation of a number based on reasonable assumptions.

Birth rate

The number of births in a population in a certain amount of time.

Death rate

The number of deaths in a population in a certain amount of time.

Immigration

Moving into a population.

Emigration

moving out of a population.

Limiting factor

An environmental factor that prevents a population from increasing. (Food, Space, and Weather Conditions.

Carrying capacity

the largest population that an environment can support.

Adaptation

The behaviors and physical characteristics of a species that allow them to live successfully in their environment.

Niche

An organism's particular role in an ecosystem, or how it makes its living. (What they do to survive.)

Competition

The struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat with limited resources.

Predation

An interaction in witch one organism stalks, captures, kills, and consumes another organism.

Predator

The organism that stalks, captures, kills and consumes another ogranism. (Prey)

Prey

The organsim that gets stalks, captured, killed, and consumed by the predator

Symbiosis

A close relationship between two different species that benefits at least one of the species.(one organism is always much smaller)

Mutualism

A relationship between two species in which both species benefit.

Commensalism

A relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed.

Parasitism

One organism that benefits on or inside an organism and harming it, but sometimes killing it.

Parasite

The organism that benefits in parasitism. (does the harming or killing)

Host

The organism the parasite lives on or in. (gets harmed or killed)
