Fault
A fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock, caused by the movement of rock.
Tension
A force that pulls rocks apart.
Compression
A force that pushes rocks together.
Shear Force
A force that causes parts of a material to slide past each other.
Syncline
A type of fold that bends downward, forming a trough.
Anticline
A type of fold that bends upward, forming a dome.
Normal Fault
A fault that occurs due to tension, where one block slips down relative to another.
Reverse Fault
A fault that occurs due to compression, where one block is pushed up over another.
Graben
A section of rock that has been dropped down between two normal faults.
Horst
A section of rock that has been raised up between two reverse faults.
Strike-Slip Fault
A fault that occurs due to shear forces, where two pieces of rock move sideways past each other.
