Revolution
Orbital motion of one body around another (Earth around Sun = 1 year; Moon around Earth ≈ 27.3 days).
Rotation
Spinning on own axis. Earth rotates west-to-east → Sun appears to rise in east. Causes day and night.
Axial Tilt
Earth's axis is tilted 23.5° → causes SEASONS (NOT changing distance from Sun).
Solar Eclipse
Moon passes between Earth and Sun → only occurs at NEW MOON. Narrow path on Earth.
Lunar Eclipse
Earth's shadow falls on Moon → only occurs at FULL MOON. Visible from Earth's entire night side. Moon may appear red ('blood moon').
Tides
Rise and fall of ocean water; primarily caused by Moon's gravity. Spring tides (New/Full Moon) are highest; neap tides (quarter Moons) are smallest.
Moon Phases
New → Waxing Crescent → First Quarter → Waxing Gibbous → Full → Waning Gibbous → Third Quarter → Waning Crescent → New
Moon Phase Terms
Waxing = growing in light | Waning = shrinking in light | Gibbous = more than half lit | Crescent = less than half lit
