First & Second Paragraph
First, begin each paragraph by stating the strength or weakness. Be as specific as possible!
For example: Joe appears to have a weakness in the area of phonics. Specifically he has difficulty decoding words with vowel digraphs.
Next, define the strength or weakness in your own words. Be very clear!
For example: Phonics means that ....
Then, provide specific evidence from the text. Use at least 3 examples (possibly more!) and feel free to directly quote from the text.
For example: One instance that shows Joe's use of phonics is......When Joe said.....instead of ......
Last, briefly wrap-up by explaining how a strength/weakness in the area you’ve identified contributes to overall reading performance.
For example: Phonics is important to overall reading because....
Third Paragraph
First, state an activity or instructional strategy the student would benefit from to improve the identified weakness.
For example: Joe would benefit from explicit instruction in vowel digraphs and identifying them in words...
Next, explain what the activity/strategy is.
For example: Explicit instruction with vowel digraphs means that Joe would learn that when two vowels are next to one another in a word (such as "ai") the first letter is pronounced (it makes the long-A sound).
Then, describe how the teacher would facilitate this activity/strategy with the student.
For example: The teacher would use scaffolded instruction, beginning with modeling....
Fourth Paragraph
First, explain why the strategy/activity would be effective
For example: This approach would be effective for Joe because it builds on his understanding of basic long vowels and....
Then, describe how it would improve the area of weakness and ultimately improve reading performance
For example: This will improve Joe's oral reading fluency by increasing his decoding accuracy...
