why does Odysseus go to the land of the dead?
To talk to the blind prophet tiresias for instructions of what will happen later on in his journey. he tells him to not eat the cattle on helio’s island, that he will have to go through the strait of scylla, pass through the sirens and learn information, win back his nation, and sacrifice to poseidon because of what he did to the cyclopes.

what did the men do while Odysseus slept on helios’ island?
kill helios’s cattle. they were starving after being there for a month and had no food, and believed the gods would understand.
how did Helios react?
very angrily. goes to Zeus and threatens to leave to the underworld forever if he does not punish odysseus.
who intervenes for Helios?
Zeus intervenes by agreeing to strike his boat one time with a lightning bolt, and does so while they are at sea.
what happens to Odysseus and his men after killing the cattle?
their ship breaks apart and the men all drown. Odysseus drifts on wood for 9 days before reaching scylla and charybdis and hanging from a branch, before being guided by Zeus to an island inhabited by calypso, a nymph.
