What does the social development theory suggest
Theory suggests learning takes place through social encounters particularly in the presence of adults or experienced others
Learning happens through social interaction => in PE this means performers improve skills by working with others - coaches, teachers or more experienced players = MKO's
What does MKO stand for
More knowledgable players
=> someone with greater understanding
What is constructivism
Constructivism refers to the learners ability to construct knowledge through active engagement
What does ZPD stand for
The zone of proximal development
=> it is the gap between what a performer can and cannot do on their own
What does scaffolding refer to in PE
this is the support given by the MKO
In PE
Demonstrations
Verbal cues
Feedback
Breaking skills into parts
Support is gradually removed as the performer becomes more independent
How does this apply to PE
In practical sports settings:
A beginner tennis player improves by practicing with a skilled partners (MKO)
A coach gives step-by-step guidance (scaffolding)
The drills are set at the right levels (ZPD)
What are the strengths of the social development theory
Encourages teamwork and communication
Reflects real-life coaching situations
Helps to develop both skill and confidence
What are some limitations of the social development theory
Relies to heavily on having a good coach or MKO
Learners may become dependent on guidance
Not all learning happens socially (some is individual)
