Phylogeny
A branching diagram that represents evolutionary relationships among species, populations, or genes.
Clade
A taxon that includes a common ancestor and all of its descendants.
Sister taxa
Two taxa that are each other's closest relatives.
Homologous traits
Similar traits shared by two or more taxa due to inheritance from a common ancestor.
Analogous traits
Similar traits that evolved independently in two taxa, often due to convergent evolution.
Polytomy
A node in a phylogenetic tree that represents an unresolved branching, where relationships cannot be determined.
Molecular clock
A method used to estimate the time of divergence between species based on the rate of molecular change.
Synapomorphy
Shared derived traits that are found in two or more members of the ingroup but not in the outgroup.
Monophyletic group
A taxon that consists of a common ancestor and all of its descendants.
Paraphyletic group
A taxon that consists of a common ancestor and some, but not all, of its descendants.
Polyphyletic group
A taxon that does not include the most recent common ancestor of the group.
