the sandwich generation
-a generation of people who care for their aging parents while supporting their own children. Now that people are living longer and children are growing up/living at home longer, the “sandwiching” is felt by both men and women in their fifties.
the zombie family
-the family appears to be alive, but in reality it is dead. People want it to be a haven of security in an insecure world (risk society), but today’s family cannot provide this because of its own instability.
Beck and ‘risk society’
-people turn to the family in hope of finding security, in reality the family is subject to “risk” and more uncertainty than ever before.
-eg. divorce, separation - it appears to be alive, but in reality it is dead.
results of ‘risk society’
-as a result of ‘risk society’ we are more aware of risks. This is because making choices involves calculating the risks and rewards of the different options open to us.
