Sick Man of Europe
A term used to describe the declining Ottoman Empire in the context of European political and military powers.
Ottomans
The region within Europe that generally rejected Western ideas, experienced corruption, and increased nationalism within their diverse state.
Qing Dynasty
The nation that faced increased European intervention which helped push industrialization since they had a weak government.
Japan
The nation who was forced open by the West, but embraced Western innovation and pushed for industrialization.
Industrial Revolution
A period of major industrialization that marked the transition from agrarian societies to industrialized ones, impacting economies and societies globally.
Mamluks
The empire who was soundly defeated by Napoleon’s invasion in 1798.
Muhammed Ali
A leader who came to rule Egypt, breaking away from the Ottomans and creating modern military with western ideas, but many other Western reforms failed or were not recognized.
Meiji Restoration
A period from 1868 onward in Japan characterized by the overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the modernization of Japan along Western lines.
Khedives
Formal rulers of Egypt established after Muhammed Ali's death, responsible for governing Egypt and managing its economy.
Zaibatsu
Powerful business conglomerates in Japan that emerged during the Meiji era, influencing the country's economy and industry.
Treaty of Kanagawa
An 1854 agreement between the United States and Japan, which opened Japan to international trade after years of isolation.
Charter Oath of 1868
A document that abolished the samurai class and feudalism in Japan, laying the foundation for modern governance.
Commodore Matthew Perry
The U.S. Navy officer whose 1853 expedition to Japan led to the opening of Japanese ports to American trade.
Suez Canal
A man-made waterway completed in 1869 that connected the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, increasing Egypt's strategic importance.

The Japanese Parliament that was democratic in form, but authoritarian in nature.
