Fluid Balance
The maintenance of the correct amount of fluid in the body's compartments critical for metabolic function.
Osmolality
Measure of concentration of dissolved particles (proteins, ions) in body fluid compartments, with a normal value of ~300 mOsm/kg.
(ADH)
Hormone secreted by the posterior pituitary gland that promotes water retention by increasing permeability in kidney tubules.
Aldosterone
A mineralocorticoid secreted by the adrenal cortex that regulates sodium and potassium balance and fluid retention.
Renin
An enzyme secreted by the kidneys that converts angiotensinogen to angiotensin I, initiating the renin-angiotensin system.
Hypothalamus
Brain region that produces ADH and oxytocin and regulates fluid balance through osmoreceptor stimulation.
Hemoconcentration
An increase in the concentration of cells and solutes in a given volume of blood, often caused by decreased plasma volume.
Osmosis
The movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher concentration.
Vasopressin
Another name for ADH, which constricts blood vessels and increases water reabsorption in the kidneys.
Angiotensin II
A peptide hormone that increases blood pressure by causing blood vessels to constrict and stimulating aldosterone release.
