Latin Half Yearlies

Oceanum interea surgens Aurora reliquit.

Meanwhile, rising Aurora left River Ocean

It portis iubare exorto delecta iuventus;

As the sun’s beam rose, the best young men came to the gates

retia rara, plagae, lato venabula ferro,

With nets of wide mesh, with nets of close mesh, hunting spears of broad blade,

Massylique ruunt equites et odora canum vis.

And Massylian horsemen and the keen-scented strength of hounds rush about

Reginam thalamo cunctantem ad limina primi
Poenorum exspectant,

The queen, in her bridal chamber lingering at the threshold is awaited by the leaders of the Carthaginians,

ostroque insignis et auro stat sonipes,

And conspicuous in purple and gold stands her steed,

ac frena ferox spumantia mandit.

And proudly champs the foaming bit

Tandem progreditur, magna stipante caterva,

At last she steps forth with a great crowd pressing around her, 

Sidoniam picto chlamydem circumdata limbo.

Enveloped by a Sidonian robe with embroidered border

Cui pharetra ex auro, crines nodantur in aurum,

Her quiver is made of gold, her hair is fastened in a gold clip,

aurea purpuream subnectit fibula vestem.

A golden brooch fastens her purple dress.

Nec non et Phrygii comites et laetus Iulus
incedunt.

Also the Phrygian companions and joyful Iulus come on the scene.

Ipse ante alios pulcherrimus omnis
infert se socium Aeneas atque agmina iungit.

He himself, most handsome beyond all others, Aeneas, introduces himself as her ally and joins together their retinues.
