To prepare a sample of soap

Step 1

Set up apparatus as shown in diagram 1

Step 2

Heat the mixture for 30 mins

Step 3

Allow apparatus to cool and arrange it for distillation in diagram 2

Step 4

Heat until 20cm3 of ethanol is collected

Step 5

Pour hot reaction mixture into a beaker containing brine, soap doesn't dissolve in salt solution and is precipitated

Step 6

Filter off soap as shown in diagram 3

Step 7

Wash soap with fresh salt solution and ice cold water to remove any remaining sodium hydroxide]

Prevent rigorous boiling whuch can cause apparatus to explode

Step 8

Allow soap to airdry overnight

How to test if soap is prepared?

Lather formed when mixed with water
