Fugitive Slave Law

Also declared that slaves are "property," not people, and under the 5th amendment, private property is protected; therefore, the Missouri Compromise was ruled unconstitutional because citizens couldn't be prohibited from owning slaves. This case s unconstitutional and the incident increased tension in north.

Abraham Lincoln
Republican nominee for Illinois senator who lost to Stephen Douglas in 1858 but was elected as 16th President of the U.S. in 1860. He condemned slavery; his election prompted Southern states to secede from Union in fear of slavery being abolished by Lincoln.
Election of 1860
Lincoln, the Republican candidate, won because the Democratic party was split over slavery. As a result, the South no longer felt like it has a voice in politics and a number of states seceded from the Union.
