Monomer
Smaller / repeating molecules from which larger molecules (polymers) are made.
Polymer
A molecule made up of many identical or similar molecules (monomers).
Condensation Reaction
A chemical reaction where 2 molecules join together, forming a chemical bond.
Hydrolysis Reaction
A chemical reaction where 2 molecules are separated by breaking a chemical bond, using a water molecule.
Example of a Monomer
Monosaccharide, such as glucose.
Example of a Polymer
Polynucleotide (DNA or RNA) or Polysaccharide (e.g., starch).
Example of a Monomer for Polypeptide
Amino acid.
Example of a Reaction for Polysaccharide Formation
Condensation.
Example of a Reaction for Peptide Bond Formation
Condensation between amino acids.
