Stress Trajectory
Stressor: person, event, or demand that triggers stress response
Distress (Strain): adverse psychological, physical, behavioral, an organizational consequences that may occur as a result of stressful events
Approaches to Stress
Homeostatic; result of an external demand upsetting body's homeostasis (equilibrium)
Cognitive Appraisal: person’s cognitive appraisal of a person or event as stressful; if not event itself, how we think about it
Person-Environment Fit: there is a mismatch between a person’s skills and the demands of their jobs or social roles
Psychoanalytic: comes from the discrepancy between a person’s ego-ideal and their self-image
Stress Response (Strain)
begins with a release of chemical messengers like adrenaline into bloodstream
activates sympathetic nervous system & triggers mind-body changes to prepare for “fight or flight” increased heart rate and heightened senses
Sources of Stress (Role Conflict)
Intra: tasks demands like job design, working conditions, workload, and role demands like role ambiguity, conflict, overload
vs.
Inter Role Conflict: poor relationships with colleagues or supervisors
Work Family Conflict and Spillover: martial problems, childcare issues, elder care

Eustress: positive; energizing and motivating
Distress: negative; can cause variety of problems like psychological, medical, behavioral
