There is one more component: the predator is dependent on an abundant prey supply as food. So what do you expect will happen when the predator has done a pretty good job at killing lots of its prey?
They will start to starve as they run low on food and compete with each other over a dwindling food supply.

The predator population is affected by its own effects on the prey population. The predator population will begin to drop as starvation begins to become severe. This reduces the predation pressure on the very heavily hit prey population.
