Lūcia et Quīntus in vīllā erant.

Lucia and Quintus were in the house.

2

Lūcia Quīntō dīxit, "Āfer candidātus optimus est.

Lucia said to Quintus, "Afer is the best candidate.

3

Āfer multās vīllās et multās tabernās habet.

Afer has many homes and many shops.

4

Pompēiānī Āfrō favent, quod vir dīves et callidus est."

The Pompeians favor Afer, because he is a rich and clever man."

5

"minimē! Holcōnius candidātus optimus est," Quīntus sorōrī respondit.

No! Holconius is the best candidate," Quintus replied to his teacher.

6

"Holcōnius est vir nōbilis. Pompēiānī Holcōniō crēdunt, quod pater senātor erat."

Holconius is a noble man. The Pompeiians trust Holconius, because his father was a senator."

7

Quīntus, quod erat īrātissimus, ē vīllā discessit.

Quintus, because he was very angry, departed from the house.

8

Quīntus sibi dīxit, "soror mea est stultissima.

Quintus said to himself, "My sister is very stupid.

9

gēns nostra Holcōniō semper favet."

Our family always favors Holconius."

10

Quīntus per viam ambulābat et rem cōgitābat.

Quintus was walking through the street and was thinking about the problem.

11

subitō parvam tabernam cōnspexit, ubi scrīptor habitābat.

Suddenly he caught sight of a small shop, where a signwriter was living.

12

scrīptor Sulla erat.

The signwriter was Sulla.

13

Quīntus, postquam tabernam vīdit, cōnsilium cēpit.

Quintus after he saw the shop, had an idea.

14

tabernam intrāvit et Sullam ad vīllam suam invītāvit.

He entered the shop and invited Sulla to his house.

15

postquam ad vīllam vēnērunt, Quīntus Sullae mūrum ostendit.

After they came to the house, Quintus showed Sulla a wall.

16

"scrībe hunc titulum!" inquit.

"Write this notice!" he said.

17

"scrībe 'Quīntus et soror Holcōniō favent.

"write 'Quintus and his sister favor Holconius.

18

Quīntus et soror Holcōniō crēdunt.'"

Quintus and his sister trust Holconius.'"

19

Quīntus scrīptōrī decem dēnāriōs dedit. "placetne tibi?" rogāvit Quīntus.

Quintus gave the signwriter 10 denarii. "Does it please you?" asked Quintus.

20

"mihi placet," Sulla Quīntō respondit.

"It is pleasing to me," replied Sulla to Quintus.

21

Sulla, postquam dēnāriōs accēpit, titulum in mūrō scrīpsit.

Sulla, after he accepted the denarii, wrote the slogan on the wall.
