From there Publius Valerius ordered Titus Herminius with a small force to lie in ambush secretly at the second milestone by the Gabinian way,

Sp. Lucium cum expedita iuventute ad portam Collinam stare donec hostis praetereat;

he ordered Spurius Larcius to stand at the Colline gate with light armed youths until the enemy should pass,

inde se obicere ne sit ad flumen reditus.

from there he should throw himself in the way so that [the enemy] cannot return to the river.

Herminius, when he felt the disturbance, he rushed in from his ambushes, and struck the backs of the Etruscans who turned against [Valerius].

A shout was rendered both here on the left from the Colline gate and there, on the right from Naevia;

ita caesi in medio praedatores, neque ad pugnam viribus pares et ad fugam saeptis omnibus viis.

thus the pillagers were killed in the middle and were no match [for the Romans] in strength at fighting, and they were shut off from all ways to flee.
