Ionic Bonding
strong electrostatic attraction between cations and anions
Describe structure and properties of ionic compounds?
-consist of metal bonded with a non-metal
-giant ionic lattices
-high melting and boiling points
-are soluble in polar solvents
-can only conduct electricity when molten or aqueous
Covalent bonding
when there is strong attraction between shared pairs of electrons and nuclei of atoms in non-metallic compounds
Describe properties of giant covalent lattice
-high melting and boiling points
-insoluble
-cannot conduct electricity
What is multiple covalent bonding?
When more than one pair of electrons is shared
What are lone pairs?
The pairs of electrons that are not shared
What are dative covalent bonds
when the shared pair of electron is only supplied by one of the bonding atoms (the pair was originally a lone pair)
Metallic bonding
strong electrostatic attraction between cations and delocalised electrons
Describe the structure and properties of a metallic structure
-strong metallic bonds
-high conductivity
-high melting and boiling points
