Style

is a variety of language and a distinctive manner in which people express themselves in a particular situation

Stylistics

study of style

Frozen style

• oratorical, static style

• handed down through tradition or laws

• original language has been preserved

• usually stated without any response

Examples of Frozen style

• Biblical passages

• Prayers

• National & International laws

• Panatang Makabayan

Formal style

• deliberative style

• rigid, strict, and has standard vocabulary

• important or serious situations

• large audience

• employs formal language

• prepared speech

Examples of Formal style

• Speech

• Sermons

• SONA

Consultative style

• two way communication in a professional setting

• to seek help (from superior or elder)

• polite but lacks intimacy and not quite as formal

Examples of Consultative style

• teachers and students

• employer and employee

• lawyer and client

• one talks to stranger

Casual style

• used in a relaxed or normal situation with friends or family members

• impart information

• may involve the use of slang

• informal, elliptical

Slang

• shortened

• acronyms

• does not use denotatively

Ellipsis

omission of words that are presumed, understood such as in “I can’t” “I don’t”

Intimate style

used in private communication among families, lovers, and close friends with significant shared personal history, knowledge and experience

Examples of Intimate style

• talk to your parents or siblings at home

• intimate labels such as dear, darling, mom, dad, honey, etc.
