Oxidation
loss of electrons
Reduction
Gaining of electrons
Oxidizing agent
causes another atom to undergo oxidation and itself is reduced
Reducing agent
causes another atom to reduce and is itself oxidized
LEO says GER
Loss of Electrons is Oxidation
Gain of Electrons is Reduction
Rules for oxidation number
1. The oxidation number of a free element is 0
2. Oxidation of H is usually +1, except when paired with an element of lower electronegativity
3. Sum of the oxidation numbers of all atoms present is equal to the charge of the ion
Spectator Ions
Ions that take part in the reaction but will remain in the solution
Chemically inert
