Relative Clauses

Nebensätze, die das Bezugswort im Hauptsatz näher bestimmen (Subordinate clauses that more closely define the reference word in the main clause).

Defining Relative Clause Example

He is one of those kids who/that loves to wear expensive clothes. (Specifies which kids)

Non-Defining Relative Clauses

Clauses that provide additional information about a noun that is already defined. Requires commas.

Non-Defining Relative Clause Example

Cassie, who works in a bike shop, wishes she'd saved a bit more money. (Cassie is already defined)

Relativpronomen (Relative Pronoun) in Non-Defining Clauses

Is mandatory (who/which/whose). Refers to the whole main clause.
