What is a variable in algebra?
A symbol, usually a letter, that represents an unknown number or a quantity that can change.
What is an algebraic expression?
A mathematical phrase that contains numbers, variables, and operation symbols (like {(+)} or {(-)}), but no equality or inequality signs. For example, {2x + 5}.
What is the difference between an algebraic expression and an algebraic equation?
An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase without an equals sign (e.g., {3x + 7}), while an algebraic equation is a statement that two expressions are equal, containing an equals sign (e.g., {3x + 7 = 10}).
What does the order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS) dictate?
It dictates the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed to solve an expression or equation: Parentheses/Brackets, Exponents/Orders, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).
