New cards

Protectionism + delay federation

Most colonies (except NSW) supported Protectionism (tariffs to protect local industries from ext comp) local goods = cheaper
-Vic = major support cus helped emerging industries during the economic boom

Tariffs = base of financial structure of small colonies

Smaller colonies (Tasmania, WA) feared economic interest from Vic, NSW = come first = business + colony suffer

8
New cards

Racism + immigration

Gold rush = sudden influx of immigrants to Aus led strong anti-‘White Anglo Saxon Protestant’ (WASP) esp aim toward chinese

Before federation Aus defense

Each colonies had their own small defense force

12
New cards

States worried about fed

SA = colony est by free settlers only democratic rights that wern’t anywhere else in Aus
-worried that w/fed, they could loose rights

1890 WA= granted right to self rule, did not want to loose independence to a fed parliament

Tas + WA = also worry that NSW/VIC = place their own interest first in fed aus
-However, NSW+VIC thought it was unfair that larger tax income = be share w/ smaller states
