Bandage
A strip of material or gauze that is wrapped around a part of the body.
Splint
A rigid appliance for fixation used to immobilize body parts.
Cast
A stiff dressing or casing used to immobilize body parts.
Functions of a bandage
Functions include absorb, protect, maintain cleanliness, apply pressure, immobilize, debride, pack, inform, provide comfort, and enhance aesthetics.
Primary layer
The first layer of a bandage, used only when there is a wound.
Secondary layer
The middle layer of a bandage that provides bulk for immobilization.
Tertiary layer
The outer layer of a bandage that keeps everything in place and provides protection.
Serosanguineous
Referring to fluids that contain both blood and serum, typically appearing yellowish with small amounts of blood.
Adherent dressing
Dressing that adheres to the wound, used for mechanical debridement and absorption of exudates.
Occlusive dressing
Non-permeable dressing that creates a moist environment to facilitate healing.
Robert Jones Bandage
A bandage used for temporary stabilization of fractures that provides a substantial amount of padding.
Modified Robert Jones Bandage
A bandage that uses less padding than the Robert Jones bandage for prevention of edema.
Ehmer Sling
A type of sling that prevents weight bearing on the hind limb by creating abduction and internal rotation of the femur.
Velpeau Sling
A sling used to prevent weight bearing on the forelimb with all joints flexed to the body wall.
Hobbles
A specialized bandage used for preventing weight bearing, often with the purpose of immobilization.
