What are the three locations where memory is stored according to Atkinson and Shiffrin's MSM?
Sensory buffer, Short-term memory (STM), Long-term memory (LTM).
What is the function of the sensory buffer in the MSM?
It temporarily holds information from the environment very briefly in various forms (visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory).
How does information enter Short-term Memory (STM)?
Information enters STM from the sensory buffer if attention is paid to the stimuli.
What happens to information in STM if it is rehearsed?
If rehearsed, information moves to Long-term Memory (LTM).
What is the capacity and duration of Long-term Memory (LTM)?
LTM has unlimited capacity and duration.
What is Miller's Magic Number related to STM?
The average number of items that can be held in STM is 7±2 items.
What is the serial position effect?
It refers to the finding that recall accuracy varies based on an item's position in a study list, with better recall for items at the beginning and end of the list.
What is the recency effect in memory recall?
The tendency to recall items from the end of a list better than those in the middle.
What is the primacy effect in memory recall?
The tendency to recall the first few items in a list better than those in the middle.
How does the Levels of Processing Theory challenge the MSM?
It suggests that the depth at which we process information may be more important than the frequency of rehearsal.
