Element
A pure substance composed of only one kind of atom that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Compound
A substance formed when two or more elements are chemically combined in a fixed ratio, resulting in unique physical and chemical properties.
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded and can be separated by physical means.
Metal
An element that is shiny, malleable, ductile, and a good conductor of heat and electricity.
Nonmetal
An element that is dull, brittle, and a poor conductor of heat and electricity.
Metalloid
An element that has properties of both metals and nonmetals, can be shiny or dull, malleable, and ductile.
Chemical Reaction
The process where substances interact to form new substances by the rearrangement of atoms.
Solubility
The ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature and pressure.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture that appears uniform throughout because the components are evenly distributed.
Concentration
The amount of solute dissolved in a given quantity of solvent or mixture.
