What is pancreatitis?
Inflammation of the pancreas, which can be acute or chronic.
What are some predisposing factors for pancreatitis?
Alcohol, trauma, infectious disease (especially of the biliary tract), and certain drugs.
What can obstructing the pancreatic duct lead to?
Rupture and enzymatic digestion of the pancreas.
What are the known risk factors for cancer of the pancreas?
Cigarette smoking, exposure to chemical carcinogens, diabetes mellitus, pancreatitis, and a diet high in meat, fat, and coffee.
How long may a patient live after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer?
Typically only 4-8 months after diagnosis.
What nutrition method may be required for pancreatitis patients?
Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), usually if enteral feedings are not tolerated.
What dietary measures are recommended for pancreatitis prevention?
A bland, low-fat, high-protein, high-carbohydrate diet with no alcohol or gastric stimulants.
What is the role of IV fluids in treating pancreatitis?
IV fluids are used to maintain hydration and electrolyte balance in pancreatitis patients.
What is the effect of morphine in pancreatitis treatment?
Morphine should be avoided as it can cause spasms of the sphincter of Oddi.
List some signs and symptoms of pancreatitis.
Abdominal pain, anorexia, nausea and vomiting, malaise, restlessness, low-grade fever, jaundice, weight loss, steatorrhea, tachycardia.
