aka qualitative
data in categories (eg red, yes, type)
numerical
aka quantitative
data in numbers (eg 1, 1.2)
nominal
no order categorical data
eg. red, white, blue
ordinal
ordered categorical data
eg. yes, maybe, no
discrete
quantitative data with only integers
eg. 1, 2, 3, 4
continuous
quantitative but can be divided into smaller parts (decimals)
eg. 1.4, 1.23, ½
