Type Certificate
A document by which the authority states that an applicant has demonstrated compliance of a Type Design to all applicable requirements.
Type Design - Drawings and Specifications
Listing necessary to define configuration and design features; must show compliance with type certification basis + environmental protection requirements.
Type Design - Information on Materials, Processes, and Methods
Manufacture and assembly details ensuring conformity.
Type Design - Airworthiness Limitations Section
Approved section of instructions for continued airworthiness.
Type Design - Other Data
For determining airworthiness, noise characteristics, fuel venting, exhaust emission of later products.
Type Design Key Point
Type Design "freezes" product configuration + production methods; any deviation = Change → must be approved.
Design Organization
Applicant becomes Type Certificate Holder (TCH) once TC is issued; must hold/apply for Design Organization Approval (DOA) under Part 21.
Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS)
Concise definition of configuration of a type-certificated product including dimensions, wing loading, limiting airspeeds, placards, control surface travel, engine installations, approved combinations.
Supplemental Type Certificate (STC)
Issued for major change not requiring new TC application (e.g., agricultural system, cargo conversion); TCH must not object and must collaborate for continued airworthiness.
Parts and Appliances Approval
Compliance methods include JTSO/TSO/ETSO Authorization, Standard Parts, Joint Part Approval (JPA), PMA under FAR 21.303, Owner/Operator Produced Parts, or other manner approved.
Type Certification of Imported Products
Certification assessed by importing state authority based on exporting state's certification to ensure equivalent safety.
Bilateral Agreements
Simplify TC validation based on mutual confidence; importing state gives same validity as if issued domestically.
Airworthy (FAR Part 3.5a)
Aircraft conforms to type design + condition for safe operation.
PCAR Definition of Airworthy
Status when aircraft/engine/propeller/part conforms to approved design + safe condition.
Eligibility for Airworthiness Certificate
Conformity to Type Certificate + Condition for safe operation; if either fails → Unairworthy.
Certificates of Airworthiness (EASA Part 21)
Certificates of Airworthiness, Restricted Certificates of Airworthiness, Permits to Fly.
Certificates of Airworthiness Requirements
New aircraft → Statement of conformity, W&B, flight manual; Used aircraft → various authority statements and records.
Restricted Certificates of Airworthiness
For aircraft not meeting standard TC provisions but must comply with restricted basis + environmental requirements.
Permits to Fly
For aircraft not meeting certification specs but safe under defined conditions (development testing, ferry flights, exhibitions, etc.).
FAA Standard Airworthiness Certificates
Categories include Normal, Utility, Acrobatic, Commuter, Transport, Balloons, Special classes.
FAA Special Airworthiness - Primary Category
Single engine, ≤61-knot stall, ≤2700 lb (or 3375 lb seaplane), ≤4 seats, unpressurized.
FAA Special Airworthiness - Restricted Category
For special purpose ops such as agricultural, forest/wildlife, patrol, weather control, survey.
FAA Special Airworthiness - Limited Category
Surplus military aircraft converted to civilian use; no passengers/cargo for hire.
Light-Sport Aircraft (LSA)
≤1320 lb land, ≤1430 lb water, ≤120 knots CAS, ≤2 seats, single reciprocating engine, fixed prop, non-pressurized.
Experimental Certificates
For R&D, compliance tests, training, exhibition, racing, amateur-built, kit-built, LSA.
Special Flight Permits
For aircraft safe to fly but not meeting requirements (ferry, storage, delivery, repair, customer demo, excess fuel weight).
Provisional Airworthiness Certificates
Issued for aircraft with Provisional Type Certificates; limited duration.
Export Airworthiness Approval
Issued for aircraft, engines, propellers, articles (FAA Form 8130-4 and 8130-3).
ARROW Documents
Airworthiness Certificate, Registration Certificate, Radio Station License, Operating Handbook, Weight & Balance.
